Engaging stakeholders

An NHS hospital ward reception

All quality improvement efforts require input and support from a range of individuals and we cannot expect to change the behaviours of the people around us without engaging with them first.

Including the right people on an improvement team is critical to a successful improvement effort… it’s all about the people.

Teams vary in size and composition and it is important to build a team to suit the needs of the change; however most teams will include:

  • A day-to-day leader
  • A clinical champion
  • A technical expert

Tips for creating your QI team:

  1. Review the aim and consider the system you are trying to effect and any others that may be impacted
  2. Make sure the team includes people of different disciplines that are familiar with all the different parts of the process
  3. Having a sponsor who supports the project can help
